Beginning January 1, 2015, gas and diesel fuel prices will start rising because of new regulations under California’s climate change law, AB 32. They are part of the state’s Cap and Trade program and were created by unelected officials on the California Air Resources Board. The cost of these changes will amount to what I believe is a “hidden” gas tax.

Your editorial (Aug. 20) was spot on. California’s economic climate is in a fragile state, caused in large part by a majority party in the legislature oblivious to the realities facing business owners. These two measures would only make our situation worse and I opposed them both.

Summer travel season is right around the corner, and we’re already seeing gas prices at more than four dollars a gallon. ... we may be reminiscing about “the good old days” when gas was so “cheap,” as another new regulation coming out of Sacramento is about to raise the cost at the pump even higher.

It’s no secret that Californians pay more in taxes than those in neighboring states. We’re at the top of the charts when it comes to the state sales tax, our corporate tax rates are the highest in the west, and drivers here pay one of the steepest gas taxes in the country. Yet, despite these facts, some in Sacramento don’t think these taxes are enough.
