During the 34th Annual Legislative Session of the California Senior Legislature, the organization honored Senator Mike Morrell, R-Rancho Cucamonga, with its Henry J. Mello Award, in recognition of his commitment to California seniors.

“I’m honored to have been selected for this award,” said Morrell. “The California Senior Legislature plays a significant role in keeping issues affecting aging Californians and their families at center stage in Sacramento. As more people approach retirement, this group’s efforts will become especially important. I look forward to seeing what they accomplish in the years ahead.”

The Henry J. Mello Award is named after the organization’s founder, the late Senator Henry J. Mello of Watsonville. It is presented each year to a state legislator who has furthered the California Senior Legislature’s mission of helping preserve and enhance the quality of life for older Californians and their families.

The California Senior Legislature selected Morrell as this year’s recipient to honor him for his work on Senate Bill 997, which allows taxpayers to continue donating to the California Senior Legislature through their filed state income tax forms. The measure is intended to secure needed funding for the advocacy group. Senate Bill 997 takes effect in time for the 2015 tax season.

“We appreciate Senator Morrell’s work on behalf of seniors,” said Senior Senator Alice Loh of San Luis Obispo, Chair of the California Senior Legislature Joint Rules Committee. “His efforts in passing SB 997, along with those of his staff and the support of 14 co-authors across party lines, will give our organization the opportunity to raise the funds we need to continue our advocacy work. It was a privilege to honor him with this award.”

The California Senior Legislature is a volunteer body, established in state statute, whose primary mission is to gather ideas for legislation at the state and federal levels, craft the ideas into formal proposals, present them to members of the state legislature or Congress, and advocate for their implementation. Its main source of funding comes from its tax check-off on the state income tax form.
