SACRAMENTO – Senator Mike Morrell (R-Rancho Cucamonga) issued the following statement after Senate Democrats pushed through SB 562 by Senators Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Garden) and Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), which will disrupt Californians’ health care delivery by creating a government-run, single-payer system:
“According to their own estimates, Democrats’ plan for single-payer, government-run health care will cost California taxpayers at least $400 billion per year, more than twice the size of the state’s general fund budget. That price tag works out to approximately $22,000 per Californian per year. That is more than many low-income earners make.
“Even as they voted on the bill, Democrats admitted that the plan is not ‘fully cooked,’ that it is a work in progress, and that they still have no idea how they will pay for it. Yet they approved it anyway, suggesting that the state could withhold another 15 percent from people’s paychecks, effectively doubling the income tax rate for many and decimating job growth and prosperity in our state.
“Sacramento Democrats’ plan will lead to inefficient and insufficient medical care for patients, fewer choices for consumers, and rationed care. It will also leave Californians with a limitless tax bill for health care that has little to no accountability.
“Remember that over the last two decades, voters have supported over $20 billion in water-related bond money, but the state has built no new dams. The government has collected billions in gas taxes, yet we still have some of the nation’s worst roads. State planners are developing a $100-billion high-speed rail system, but we still have no train. Californians simply cannot trust the state to deliver results when it takes more of their hard-earned money.
“Today’s vote on this misguided bill is an embarrassment to this institution.”
